Hiking Therapy

Benefits of outdoor therapy sessions

I offer walk and talk or outdoor therapy sessions for clients in Santa Cruz County at local parks and beaches. Many people find it easier to feel grounded and connected to their emotions when outside in nature. This can be especially helpful for people who struggle with feeling put on the spot in a traditional therapy room, clients with ADHD, teens, and people who feel a deep connection to the natural world. If you want spending time outdoors to be a bigger part of your self care routine but you’re struggling with motivation, doing hiking therapy can be a great way to start exploring that.

You do not need to be able bodied or athletic to engage in hiking sessions. Depending on what feels good to you, we can walk for the whole session or find a nice spot to sit and talk at a local park or beach.

Babies and dogs welcome

As a new parents, you may know that your mental health is a priority, but it can be hard to make time for an appointment, especially if that means having to look for childcare or if you aren’t ready to be away from your little one. If your baby will nap in a stroller, then walk and talk sessions can be a great way to make time for therapy in a way that fits into your life.

Dogs are also more than welcome to join us for walk and talk sessions!

Outdoor play therapy

Many of the kids I work with love meeting outside for sessions. It can help them feel more engaged and in touch with their emotions, as well as providing great opportunities for more active play therapy activities. With kids I find it can be helpful to alternate between office-based and hiking sessions and I’m happy to be flexible about varying our meeting locations when my schedule allows.

I’ve also found hiking sessions to be a great fit for many of my adolescent clients, especially when they’re tired of sitting in a classroom all day.
